Review

This review applies to version 3.0 The latest version of this software will soon be reviewed by our informers.

BookmarkSync is a small, client-side service that keeps your favorites synchronized in every browser and on every computer that you instruct it to monitor.
Because BookmarkSync is both a client-side application as well as a server-side bookmarking service, you have all the power of your PC processor working to locate your link again. No server-side search can ever match the speed of searching on your local computer as the server is sharing its resources between hundreds or thousands of users at the same time.

What's new in version 3.0

This version 3 supports limited synchronization with Firefox 3.x. browsers.
Unicode Support
We are very pleased to announce that this version will handle UTF-8 encoding between the client and the server. You may now reliably bookmark any Russian, Arabic or Hebrew bookmarks. If you bookmark Chinese, Japanese or other eastern languages, please make sure that you have the appropriate language packs installed. In your system’s control panel, select “Regional and Language Options->Languages”, then check the box entitled “Install files for East Asian languages”.
Supports RSS feeds and Live Bookmarks.
If you are using Firefox Live bookmarks, please select ‘Prefer Local Bookmarks’ to retain your live bookmark settings. Firefox stores its icons and live bookmark information as well as bookmark comments in its favorites file. This information is retained locally and therefore must not be overwritten by your external bookmarkset during initial startups of BookmarkSync.
Setting up Firefox’s Toolbar Folder after first installation – If you desire Firefox’s bookmarks toolbar and Internet Explorer’s links toolbar to be identical, you will need to follow these steps.
1. Right-click on the BookmarkSync Icon in your system tray and uncheck ‘Automatic Synchronization’ by clicking on it. (This will temporarily disable BookmarkSync while we make our changes)
2. Open Firefox’s Bookmark Manager by left-clicking on
‘Bookmarks->Organize Bookmarks’ in any open instance of Firefox.
3. Double-click on the folder called ‘Links’ to open it and highlight all of the sub-folders and links contained in that folder. Now drag the contents of the ‘Links’ folder to the folder called ‘Bookmarks Toolbar Folder’.
4. Now delete the empty ‘Links’ folder.
5. Rename the ‘Bookmarks Toolbar Folder’ to ‘Links’ by right-clicking on the folder and selecting ‘Properties’. (Type the word ‘Links’ over the existing name property)
6. Finish the operation by right-clicking anywhere and select ‘Sort by Name’ to sort your folders in alphabetical order.
When working with the BookmarkSync client…
When synchronizing your bookmarks, the client software changes its status icon so that you will know that it is processing your bookmark collection. Depending on the operation, the number of bookmarks you are synchronizing and the speed of your computer, a sync event may take several seconds to complete. During this time, you should refrain from making additional changes to your bookmark collection so that the client has sufficient time to complete the current sync.
Please note: Multiple changes to your bookmarks in rapid succession while the client is synchronizing should be avoided. If you need to make changes to whole folders or dozens of bookmarks, it’s best to turn off automatic synchronization while the changes are being performed.
Bookmarks Backup/Restore
This version includes a bookmarks backup and restoration capability. Right-click on the SyncIT icon in your system tray and select “Tools” to find the backup/restore functions. Note: You can use this feature to obtain a printout of your favorites by double-clicking on the backup file to open it in your favorite browser. Then use the browser’s ‘print’ function to send the page to your printer.
Automatic Backup/Restore
Each time the client is restarted (normally when your computer is rebooted), the client will make a backup copy of your bookmarks and store it in ‘bookmarks.html’ format in the program directory (usually ‘C:\Program Files\BookmarkSync\Backups’) This will serve as a failsafe automatic backup of your bookmarks in case of a hardware or other failure.
Secure encrypted SSL transfers.
You can now select SSL as the default transfer mode for client/server communications. This will safeguard your privacy while transferring your bookmarks between your different computers. (This is a premium feature, available to subscribers only.)
Bookmarks Search
Finding that site that you bookmarked months or years ago is only a click or two away. Instantly search through thousands of your personal bookmarks using the built-in search function. You can easily locate where in your favorites the favorite is filed by right-clicking on the search result and selecting the ‘Locate’ command. You can also Edit or delete old bookmarks from the search tree.
Validate Websites
You can validate your links locally by right-clicking on a link in the search tree when it is open. BookmarkSync will contact the server and retrieve important server related information for each link you validate. You may also ‘validate’ a folder in which case all of the links in the folder will be validated, though no server information will be presented, favicons will be downloaded from each website if they are available.
Effortless Social Bookmarking
Keeping to SyncIT’s philosophy of not interfering with your normal internet browsing activity, this new client provides the benefits of social bookmarking without requiring you to enter tags or site descriptions for each new website you add to your favorites. Simply add a link to your favorites as you usually would by using your favorite browsers ‘Add to favorites’ method and place it in the folder of your choice. Bookmark sync will take note if many other people are also storing similar sites. Using the ‘Browse similar sites’ option from the search tree, you can see what these other websites are and add them to your own favorites if you desire. (Note: You can also use ‘Susie’, our automated librarian to automatically search and bookmark sites that meet your search criteria. These links will be added directly to the folder you specify during setup. Find out more about this feature here)
Special Offer!! Do you want the BookmarkSync client in your language?
The client software is currently provided in English, German, Dutch, Spanish, Czech and Danish, however if you would like a version in your language, we will build one for you. Download the strings table spreadsheet located on the page at http://www.sync2it.com/common/international.php and add your translation. Email the spreadsheet back and we’ll make the updated client available to all of our users and credit you with the translation. As a token of our thanks, we’ll give you a free ‘lifetime’ subscription to BookmarkSync!* (Our ‘lifetime’, not yours- J)
Icons – Send us your icons.
As you navigate to various websites using BookmarkSync, the client downloads the site .ico file if it exists and stores it in the “C:\Program Files\BookmarkSync 2.0\Icons” folder. If you would consider occasionally zipping up this directory and sending us a copy of your icon files, we will include them in the next release of the client software. This way, the client will be fully populated with popular icons even before any sites are visited by new users!
